My favorite app story happened when I was a very new nurse and grew to love (LOVE!) the app while in school. Many veteran RNs scoffed at me for referencing on my phone until the evening we admitted a stroke patient who had fallen at home. Her words were jumbled, but I continued to ask questions and she could point and nod answers with some accuracy. I asked if she had taken her medicine today, but we had almost no idea of her history other than abdominal surgery scars and an allergy medical bracelet she wore. She reached into the pocket of the robe the medics had draped over her and pulled out a wadded tissue with her medication in it. I whipped out my phone and to the amazement of the ortho surgeon, charge nurse, and house supervisor, I correctly identified the 10+ pills in 5 minutes using the pill ID button. Epocrates provided us enough info to make an educated guess on her issues and properly treat her until family could arrive.
