Epocrates EHR Driven by Voice of Today's Physician

Physicians Seek "Ideal" EHR Solution that Represents Their Needs

San Mateo, Calif., April 22, 2010

As Epocrates enters the electronic health record (EHR) market, it continues to stay true to its founding premise of innovative, user-friendly technology for physicians. To develop the "ideal" EHR solution for solo and small group practice physicians, Epocrates is leveraging a decade of experience, engaging the medical community and maximizing Tom Giannulli, MD, MS, an essential member of the Epocrates EHR development team.

Epocrates is dedicated to developing an EHR solution that works for physicians and delivers on the promise of EHR technology to provide a better level of patient care. More than 80 percent of physicians report primarily using technology in their practice as a way to help improve clinical care and patient outcomes, according to a recent Epocrates survey of 1,100 physicians. The survey also reinforces that physicians are demanding an EHR offering designed from a physicians' perspective, which Dr. Giannulli is providing as a practicing internist and Epocrates' chief medical information officer.

"There is a definite need for a physician-centric EHR solution," said Bob Quinn, chief technology officer of Epocrates. "Tom's deep knowledge of healthcare information technology and his real-world practice perspective is a driving force behind our EHR development."

Epocrates' mobile and web-based EHR is strongly influenced by Dr. Giannulli's three criteria for a successful solution: 1) easy to use 2) intuitive and 3) flexible. He touches every component of the product from the screen's appearance, to the ease of data entry, reference resources and administrative tasks. Dr. Giannulli's involvement in this endeavor will ensure that the Epocrates EHR solution is built to accommodate physicians' workflow and support the many patients encountered each day.

"Epocrates represents the doctor first, then the technology, by always making doctors' needs a priority. I've trusted and respected Epocrates for many years using its mobile references, along with 275,000 other physicians across the U.S.," said Dr. Giannulli. "The company's singular focus on creating a solution that doctors can actually use and would welcome into their practice is inspiring. We are on the right track and I look forward to sharing more information about the EHR solution with the medical community in the coming months."
