Epocrates Introduces Interactive CME Offering for Clinicians

Advanced Continuing Education Program Provides Convenience and Real-World Learning

San Mateo, Calif., November 10, 2010

Epocrates, Inc. announced today the launch of an advanced mobile and online continuing medical education (CME) platform that offers healthcare professionals a new way to earn required educational credits at their leisure. The platform offers a large variety of engaging and interactive CME activities across numerous specialties free of charge.

"There are better options to obtain CME than sitting and listening to a lecture," said Dr. Brad Sherman. "A clinician's time is far too precious; it's all about convenience these days. One of my first questions about CME is: Can I do it online at home or during down time on a mobile device? Epocrates now offers both in formats that are practical and even entertaining."

Through a partnership with RealCME, the new Epocrates CME platform provides physicians and other medical professionals the opportunity to complete CME/CE courses in formats such as "Virtual Patient" interactions and interactive grand rounds. Program features include:

  • Real-world patient interaction-based curriculum - The educational courses provide healthcare professionals with the opportunity to apply best practices in a variety of authentic and clinically relevant situations consistent with day-to-day patient care.
  • Personal performance assessment tools - Using the customizable CMECompanion®, an innovative knowledge management platform, healthcare professionals can track their mastery of a particular topic in real-time, compare their mastery levels with other learners, set up and track performance goals, and schedule follow-up activities.
  • Collegial feedback - All courses feature multiple faculty roles and offer faculty commentary from different professions, specialties or points of view as they discuss the management of patients over multiple visits and settings. Clinicians have the opportunity to view how their selections compare with those chosen by the faculty and other participants.

"Epocrates strives to be wherever physicians need us, starting at the point of care with our drug reference products," said Rose Crane, chief executive officer of Epocrates. "By offering this new CME platform, we are further supporting physician learning outside of the exam room with information they can apply to future patient encounters."

Healthcare professionals using Epocrates' software have unlimited, free access to the CME courses via the web (www.epocrates.com/cme) and on their iPhone® and iPod touch® devices. The courses are designated to offer between 0.25 to 1 credit from organizations such as the AMA, ACPE, ANCC and other respected content providers.
