(BMJ)—A 37-yo woman presented w/ bumps on her eyelids that she had had since puberty. Her mother had similar lesions. Over the past 3y, the pt had developed additional lesions on the eyelids that she could dig out w/ her fingernails. Exam: small, white papules atop flesh-colored papules on eyelids. What’s the dx?
Syringoma w/ secondary milia
Basal cell carcinomas
Molluscum contagiosum
Colloid milium
Trichoepithelioma
You are correct. This pt had typical syringomas—painless, nonpruritic, flesh-colored eyelid papules. Frequent rubbing and scratching are thought to have caused trauma to underlying sweat ducts and hair follicles and encouraged the formation of more than 20 secondary milia. Both syringomas and milia are benign. The periorbital location makes molluscum contagiosum unlikely in this case.
