CDC: H5N1 outbreak among CA dairy workers marks first pediatric case in U.S.
March 14, 2025

During September 30–December 24, 2024, California reported 38 human cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1), predominantly among dairy farm workers exposed to infected cows. This outbreak marks the first pediatric case of HPAI A(H5N1) in the United States, involving a child under 18 with undetermined exposure. The California Department of Public Health's investigation highlights the heightened risk for individuals with occupational exposure to HPAI A(H5N1)-infected animals. Public health agencies are urged to monitor influenza-like illnesses and conjunctivitis in such workers and to conduct thorough investigations to identify potential exposure sources and monitor for genetic changes indicating possible human-to-human transmission.
