CDC: Occupational risks linked to idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis mortality
March 7, 2025

A recent CDC report analyzed idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) mortality among U.S. workers from 2020 to 2022, revealing significant occupational disparities. The study identified 67,843 IPF deaths, with 21% potentially attributable to occupational exposures. Males in the utilities industry and females in public administration exhibited the highest mortality rates by industry. By occupation, male community and social services workers and female farming, fishing, and forestry workers were most affected. Estimates of elevated IPF mortality among workers in specific industries and occupations warrant confirmation, control of known exposure-related risk factors, and continued surveillance to better understand the full range of occupational exposures that might increase risk for developing IPF.
