Does screen time before bed affect quality of sleep in youths?
September 6, 2024
Screen time, particularly if it's interactive and occurs while in bed, is associated with impaired sleep. These findings suggest that current sleep hygiene recommendations to restrict all screen time before bed aren’t necessary.
- In this repeated-measures cohort study, researchers examined whether evening screen time is associated with sleep duration and quality that night in 79 youths (59.5% male; mean age, 12.9 years) in New Zealand. Sleep duration and quality were measured via wrist-worn accelerometers.
- Screen use in the 2 hours before bed had no association with most measures of sleep health that night. However, all types of screen time, and particularly gaming and multitasking, were associated with delayed sleep onset (mean difference, 10 minutes).
