Mindfulness meditation matches antidepressant for anxiety treatment, with fewer side effects
October 15, 2024
Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) appears to be as effective as escitalopram for treating anxiety disorders, with fewer adverse events, according to this secondary analysis.
The study involved 276 adults (75% female; mean age, 33 years) diagnosed with various anxiety disorders, randomly assigned to either an 8-week MBSR program or escitalopram treatment. Both groups showed significant reductions in anxiety symptoms, with no major differences in effectiveness. However, escitalopram users experienced more adverse events (78.6%) compared with MBSR participants (15.4%).
