AMA
One third of physicians consider scaling back or leaving job
July 26, 2024
The AMA survey, which collected over 12,400 responses from physicians across 31 states and more than 80 health systems, found that more than one third of all physicians are contemplating reducing their work hours or leaving their current positions.
The specialties with the highest intent to leave were internal medicine (39.1%), family medicine (37.3%), obstetrics and gynecology (34%), hospitalist medicine (32.9%), emergency medicine (32.3%), and pediatrics (30.2%).
In addition, 35.9% of physicians indicated plans to reduce their hours within the next year—a figure that's down from 38.1% in 2022. Overall, these findings underscore the need for healthcare organizations to address job satisfaction, stress, burnout, and other factors impacting physician well-being.
