(BMJ)—A 43-yo woman presented w/ a 1-yr hx of a painless, slow-growing tongue lesion. No relevant usual meds. No relevant personal hx or alcohol or smoking habits. Exam: firm, well-circumscribed whitish lesion in middle third of dorsum of tongue. Bx confirmed the dx. What is it?
Median rhomboid glossitis
Lichen planus
Abrikossoff tumor
Traumatic fibroma
Squamous cell carcinoma
You are correct. Incisional bx revealed granular cell tumor (GCT), also known as Abrikossoff tumor. This is an uncommon benign tumor that often occurs in the oral cavity, particularly the anterior part of the tongue. Women are more commonly affected than men. Although aggressive and malignant variants have been described, most cases of GCT are benign. The pt had an excisional bx, and there were no signs of recurrence 1y later.
