CDC confirms H5N1 bird flu infection in a child in California
November 22, 2024

On November 22, 2024, CDC confirmed a case of avian influenza A(H5N1) in a child in California, the first reported H5N1 infection in a U.S. child. The child experienced mild symptoms and received antiviral treatment. Initial tests showed low viral levels, and follow-up tests were negative for H5N1 but positive for other respiratory viruses. The child is recovering, and the California Department of Public Health is investigating the exposure source.
All household members reported symptoms, but tests for H5N1 were negative. There's no evidence of person-to-person transmission. This case was identified through routine influenza surveillance, with 55 human cases of H5N1 reported in the U.S. in 2024, 29 in California.
CDC assesses the public risk as low, but individuals exposed to infected animals or contaminated environments are at higher risk. The agency advises avoiding contact with sick or dead animals, including birds and livestock.
