CDC: E-cigarette use surges as cigarette smoking declines
March 10, 2025

CDC's report on tobacco product use among U.S. adults from 2017 to 2023 reveals a significant shift in tobacco consumption patterns. While the number of adults exclusively smoking cigarettes decreased by approximately 6.8 million, this decline was offset by a 7.2 million increase in exclusive e-cigarette users. Despite the reduction in cigarette smoking to its lowest level in 60 years, overall tobacco use hasn't changed since 2017. The findings underscore the importance of implementing comprehensive strategies, such as price increases, smoke-free policies, high-impact media campaigns, and cessation support, to address tobacco use and its associated health risks.
