CDC warns of another Salmonella outbreak linked to small pet turtles
August 20, 2024
CDC reported a multistate outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to small turtles, which are illegal to sell as pets. The outbreak has affected 51 people (23 hospitalized) across 21 states. Nearly half of the cases involved young children under five years old. No deaths have been reported. Despite a federal ban on selling turtles with shells less than four inches long, some retailers continue to sell them, leading to repeated illnesses. CDC advises purchasing turtles from reputable sources and ensuring they have shells longer than four inches to prevent infection.
