Cervical cancer mortality rates decreasing among young U.S. women
December 3, 2024

Study design: This retrospective cohort study analyzed cervical cancer mortality data from the National Center for Health Statistics for US women <25 years, spanning 1992 to 2021. Mortality rates were age-adjusted to the 2000 US standard population, and trends were assessed using NCI’s Joinpoint Regression Program.
Results: Between 1992 and 2021, among women <25 years, 398 cervical cancer deaths were reported. Cervical cancer mortality declined significantly, with an annual decrease of 3.7% from 1992-2015 to 15.2% per year from 2016-2021. Overall, there was a 62% reduction in mortality, with deaths decreasing from 55 in 1992-1994 to 13 in 2019-2021.
Impact on clinical practice: The findings underscore the critical role of HPV vaccination in reducing cervical cancer mortality.
