Could boosting vitamin D levels reduce migraine risk?
January 10, 2025
Clinical impact: Higher serum vitamin D levels may be associated with a reduced risk of migraines. Clinicians might consider monitoring and managing vitamin D levels as part of a comprehensive approach to migraine prevention and management.
Study design: This population-based analysis utilized data from 9,142 participants in the 2001–2004 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Serum vitamin D levels, measured as the concentration of 25-OH vitamin D2 + 25-OH vitamin D3, were assessed alongside self-reported migraine occurrences.
Results: One out of every five (20.53%) participants experienced migraines. Those in the highest quartile of serum vitamin D levels had a 16% lower prevalence of migraines compared with those in the lowest quartile (odds ratio, 0.84; 95% confidence interval, 0.71–0.99).
