Delabeling works: Most children safely reuse cleared antibiotics, 5-year study finds
October 20, 2025

Study Details: This prospective study followed 106 children for 5 years after antibiotic allergy delabeling at a pediatric allergy center. Families were advised that previously labeled antibiotics were safe to use. Researchers assessed subsequent antibiotic use, prescriber behavior, and adverse reactions through surveys.
Results: Three quarters of children reused delabeled antibiotics, mainly penicillins, for common infections. Mild reactions occurred in only 3 cases, with no serious events or treatment discontinuations. Non-use was mostly due to parental anxiety or lack of need.
Clinical Impact: This study supports the long-term safety and effectiveness of antibiotic allergy delabeling in children. It highlights the need for clinician and caregiver education to overcome behavioral barriers and optimize antimicrobial stewardship. Delabeling enables appropriate use of first-line antibiotics, reducing reliance on broad-spectrum alternatives and mitigating resistance.
