Do patients prefer continuity or convenience in primary care?
March 28, 2025

Clinical impact: Study findings underscore the importance of continuity in primary care. Consider strategies to enhance the doctor-patient relationship and maintain continuity of care, as patients value seeing their regular physician even if it means waiting longer for an appointment. This insight can inform scheduling practices and patient management to improve satisfaction and outcomes.
Study details: This research utilized a cross-sectional survey to assess patient preferences regarding waiting times to see their regular physician vs. opting for immediate care from another physician. Participants included adult patients from various primary care settings.
Results: A total of 4,795 adult patients were surveyed and responses were received from 52.5%. Over half of the respondents preferred seeing their primary care physician (PCP) for annual checkups and follow-ups for chronic and mental health conditions. Additionally, the majority indicated they would rather wait 3 to 4 weeks to see their PCP for sensitive examinations and new concerns related to mental health and chronic conditions.
