ENDO 2024: Updated vitamin D guideline
June 6, 2024

The Endocrine Society’s updated guideline on vitamin D supplementation and testing, published in The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism and presented at ENDO 2024, offers clinical guidance for the use of vitamin D to lower the risk of disease in individuals without established indications for vitamin D treatment or 25(OH)D testing.
Key recommendations
- Routine 25(OH)D testing is not recommended for any age groups, including pregnant persons and adults with obesity.
- In adults ages 50 years and older who have indications for vitamin D supplementation or treatment, daily lower-dose vitamin D instead of intermittent higher-dose vitamin D is recommended.
- Children, people 75 and older, pregnant people, and those with high-risk prediabetes should take empiric vitamin D supplementation.
- In the general adult population younger than age 50 years, empiric vitamin D supplementation is not recommended.
- In the general population aged 50 to 74 years, routine vitamin D supplementation is not recommended.
