FDA: Allergic reactions linked to sulfite-containing compounded drugs
June 7, 2024

FDA has received reports of allergic reactions related to sulfite-containing compounded drugs, including compounded drugs for ophthalmic use. Reported adverse events include conjunctivitis; itchy eyes and swollen eyelids, and respiratory failure. Sulfites may cause allergic-type reactions, including anaphylactic symptoms and life-threatening or less severe asthmatic episodes in susceptible individuals. To minimize risk, FDA urges those with concerns about sulfite allergies/sensitivities to ask compounders about the presence of sulfites in the drugs they compound.
