FDA bans use of brominated vegetable oil in food and beverages
July 10, 2024

FDA is revoking the regulation authorizing use of brominated vegetable oil (BVO) in food. This decision was made after research revealed potential adverse health effects in humans. BVO was used in small amounts in some beverages to prevent the citrus flavoring from separating. The new rule will be effective from August 2, 2024, providing companies one year to reformulate their products, relabel, and deplete the inventory of BVO-containing products before enforcement begins.
