FDA declares end to IV saline shortage after major supply chain push
August 12, 2025

The nationwide shortage of IV saline (sodium chloride 0.9% injection) has officially ended, according to an August 2025 statement from FDA Commissioner Marty Makary, M.D., M.P.H. The resolution follows coordinated efforts between FDA, the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response, and industry partners to expand manufacturing capacity, facilitate temporary imports, and expedite regulatory reviews. According to the statement, these actions have helped to stabilize the supply chain and meet hospital demand, prompting the product to be removed from FDA’s Drug Shortage Database. Clinicians are advised to resume use of FDA-approved saline products when available, while the agency continues to monitor supplies of other IV fluids still in shortage.
