GLP-1 RAs linked to increased chronic cough risk in patients with diabetes

December 2, 2025

card-image

A large U.S. cohort study of over 2 million adults with T2DM found that those prescribed GLP-1 receptor agonists had a significantly higher risk of developing chronic cough compared with patients on other second-line diabetes medications. This association persisted even after excluding individuals with gastroesophageal reflux disease, suggesting a mechanism independent of reflux. Researchers call for further investigation into the underlying pathways and clinical implications.
