Radiol Imaging Cancer
Majority of patients comfortable with AI as a second reader in mammogram screenings
April 24, 2025

Study details: This prospective survey study, conducted from February to August 2023, assessed patient perceptions of AI in mammogram interpretation. Participants included 518 patients undergoing screening mammograms who completed a 29-question survey covering demographics, medical history, and AI knowledge.
Results: Most participants (71%) preferred AI as a second reader alongside radiologists, while only 4.44% accepted stand-alone AI interpretation. Higher education levels correlated with greater AI acceptance (odds ratio [OR] 2.05, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.31 - 3.20; P = .002). Concerns about AI bias were more prevalent among Hispanic and non-Hispanic Black participants compared with non-Hispanic White participants.
Clinical impact: Integrating AI as a second reader in mammogram screenings could enhance diagnostic accuracy and patient trust. Understanding demographic influences on AI acceptance can guide tailored communication strategies to address concerns and improve adherence to screening protocols.
