Morning coffee habit may boost longevity
January 10, 2025
Study details: This observational study analyzed data from 40,725 adults in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and 1,463 adults in the Women’s and Men’s Lifestyle Validation Study. Clustering analysis identified two coffee drinking patterns: morning type and all-day type. The study evaluated the association between these patterns and all-cause and cause-specific mortality over a median follow-up of 9.8 years.
Results: The morning-type coffee drinking pattern was significantly associated with lower risks of all-cause mortality (hazard ratio [HR]: 0.84; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.74–0.95) and CVD-specific mortality (HR: 0.69; 95% CI: 0.55–0.87) compared with non-coffee drinkers. The all-day-type pattern didn’t show a significant association with reduced mortality risk. Additionally, higher coffee intake amounts were linked to lower all-cause mortality risk only in the morning-type pattern.
Clinical impact: These findings suggest that advising patients to consume coffee in the morning rather than throughout the day may enhance its potential health benefits, particularly in reducing mortality risk.
