Pantoprazole proves cost-effective for ICU stress ulcer prevention
December 4, 2025

An economic evaluation using data from the Reevaluating the Inhibition of Stress Erosions (REVISE) trial found that daily IV pantoprazole for critically ill, mechanically ventilated patients reduced upper GI bleeding risk and was cost-effective compared with no prophylaxis. The analysis supports pantoprazole as a value-based choice for stress ulcer prevention in this high-risk population.
Clinical takeaway: Consider IV pantoprazole for mechanically ventilated ICU patients to prevent upper GI bleeding while optimizing resource use.
