Clinical takeaway: Kinesio tape is a widely used, low-risk option that may offer modest, short-term pain relief, but doesn't provide consistent or clinically meaningful improvement in function or mobility.

Seen on elite athletes and widely promoted on social media, kinesio tape (KT) is often used to reduce pain and improve mobility, though its effectiveness remains debated. KT is elastic, cotton adhesive strips applied to support muscles and joints.

In this overview of 128 systematic reviews (310 randomized controlled trials; 15,812 patients), KT reduced pain in the immediate and short term and improved function only immediately after application. Adverse effects included skin irritation and itching.

There was little to no benefit for medium-term pain, function, strength, or range of motion, and overall certainty of evidence was very low.
