Treatment-resistant depression in older patients: To augment or to switch?

In the randomized OPTIMUM trial involving 619 adults ≥60 years of age with treatment-resistant depression, augmentation of existing antidepressant therapy with aripiprazole led to greater improvements in well-being scores over 10 weeks than switching to bupropion. Remission rates were also numerically higher in the aripiprazole augmentation group.
