Updated guidelines aim to improve insulin injection techniques

The Forum for Injection Technique & Therapy Expert Recommendations (FITTER) initiative conducted a thorough review to update guidelines for insulin injection techniques. A panel of experts analyzed current practices, identified areas for improvement, and expanded on the 2016 recommendations to optimize patient outcomes.

Key recommendations:

• Foundational science: Incorporate the latest evidence on injection device design, patient experiences, and outcomes.
• Injection technique procedures: Standardize proper techniques for insulin pens and syringes, from insulin storage to needle disposal.
• Lipodystrophy risk reduction: Focus on minimizing lipohypertrophy through effective injection site rotation and technique.
• Structured training programs: Develop comprehensive training programs for patients and caregivers to ensure correct and safe insulin delivery.

Clinical impact: Implementing these expert recommendations can significantly enhance the quality of care for patients with diabetes. Improved injection techniques and patient education are expected to lead to better glycemic control, reduced risk of injection-related complications, and overall improved patient satisfaction.
