USPSTF adds self-testing option for cervical cancer screening
December 12, 2024

In a draft recommendation statement released December 10, 2024, USPSTF recommends that women ages 30 to 65 years can opt for self-collected HPV testing every five years as an alternative to clinician-collected samples. For women ages 21 to 29 years, screening should still be done every three years using cervical cytology alone. Women aged 30 to 65 years also have the option of screening every three years with cervical cytology alone or every five years with hrHPV testing in combination with cytology (cotesting). USPSTF advises against screening for women younger than 21 years, women older than 65 years with adequate prior screening, and women who've had a hysterectomy with removal of the cervix and no history of high-grade precancerous lesions or cervical cancer.
Impact on clinical practice: These updated guidelines emphasize the importance of regular cervical cancer screening and provide flexible options for women ages 30 to 65 years.
