Uterine fibroids linked to higher CV risk
December 16, 2025

A U.S. cohort study using Optum claims data (2000–2022) examined atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) risk among 450,177 individuals with uterine fibroids and 2,250,885 age-matched controls. At 1 year, cumulative ASCVD incidence was 0.74% for the fibroid group vs. 0.30% for controls (adjusted risk ratio [aHR], 2.47). At 10 years, incidence was 5.42% vs. 3.00% (RR, 1.81). Increased risk was consistent across coronary, cerebrovascular, and peripheral artery disease components, as well as race, ethnicity, and age subgroups. Authors conclude fibroids are associated with sustained ASCVD risk up to a decade postdiagnosis, supporting targeted prevention strategies.
Clinical takeaway: Women with fibroids may benefit from CV risk assessment and preventive care.
