Zebra of the Week: Dissociative Identity Disorder
July 3, 2024

Dissociative identity disorder (DID), previously known as multiple personality disorder, has a global prevalence between 1% and 5%. DID is associated with severe childhood trauma and abuse, and often requires multiple assessments for an accurate diagnosis. A person with DID experiences separate identities or "alters," each with their own distinct behaviors and memories, and may even differ in language and expressions used. Signs of a switch to an altered state include trance-like behavior, eye blinking, eye-rolling, and changes in posture.
